Join Dr. Kevin Percuoco for this 2-hour class on degenerative disc disease. In it, he will review and explain the current state of the evidence on lumbar degenerative changes, including the pathophysiology, causes and associations, imaging implications, and specific environmental and lifestyle influences.  He will emphasize communicating degenerative findings to patients with attention to word selection and context. A clinical case report will emphasize the consequences of a misinformed patient and what was provided to overcome.
						Module 1
Topic: Degenerative Disc Disease
- An updated discussion of current recommended nomenclature and diagnostic categorization for lumbar degenerative disc disease.
- We will discuss the pathophysiology of disc degeneration and how this relates back to an underlying change in nutrition to the disc.
- We will discuss the difference between aging and pathological degeneration, inconsistencies, evidence support, and what may be better predictors of identifying pathological degeneration.
- Quiz
Module 2
Topic: Imaging
- We will discuss common imaging findings and their association with the pain experience.
- We will discuss the literature surrounding imaging findings in symptomatic and asymptomatic populations.
- We will cover MRI degenerative findings and their ability to predict future disability and low back pain.
- Quiz
Module 3
Topic: Degenerative disc, cause vs associations
- In this module, we will provide an evidence update of causes and associative factors contribution to lumbar disc degeneration. This will cover physical loading, cigarette smoking, metabolic disturbances, and genetics.
- We will further discuss genetic influences and those with predisposition to pain and its association with degenerative findings
- Quiz.
Module 4
Topic: Overdiagnosis
• In this module, we will discuss overdiagnosis, what it is, some of the driving forces behind it, and how it complicates the management decisions of patients and providers.
• We will cover how patients explain why they have persistent or recurrent problems and where they obtain these beliefs from.
• We will introduce and define overdiagnosis, driving forces, and consequences as a public health problem.
• We will cover how patients explain why they have persistent or recurrent problems and where they obtain these beliefs from.
• We will introduce and define overdiagnosis, driving forces, and consequences as a public health problem.
•  Quiz

Module 5
Topic: Communication
- In this module we will define shared decision making, outline what this looks like clinically, and discuss the implications this can have on patient behavioral responses.
- We will discuss word selection and how this influences patient medical decision making
- Quiz.
Module 6
Topic: Clinical Vignette
- In this module, cognitive functional therapy will be defined and evidence discussed in how this treatment approach may offer value to people suffering from persistent pain problems.
- We will cover a clinical vignette, presentation, examination, and case management with detailed discussion of progression of care to desired outcomes.
